Case study · Osmo UK · AylesburyA product explained in the time it takes to apply it

Osmo UK distribute wood finishes to a national trade and retail audience from Aylesbury, thirty minutes from our office. We planned a six pillar content strategy and produced two product films for LED Smart Oil.

Films we made for them

Who they are

The UK arm of a wood finish manufacturer whose oils and waxes are sold through merchants, retailers and trade suppliers across the country. The customers are joiners, flooring fitters, decorators and the merchants who advise them, and the question they all ask about a new product is the same: how do I use it, and what does it look like when it is done?

The problem they came with

Explain a technical product, an LED cured oil finish, to tradespeople and retailers who need to understand it in under two minutes, and show it being applied by someone who knows how. The films had to work on the company’s own channels, on trade partners’ websites and in merchant training, so they needed to be accurate first and polished second.

What we did, and why

A content strategy across six pillars: educational, sustainability, colour, product, events and engagement, so the films sit inside a plan rather than being one offs.

Two product films. LED Smart Oil explained, which covers what the product is and why it exists; and how to apply LED Smart Oil, filmed with the product being applied and cured in real time by someone who does it every day, so a fitter watching on a phone can follow along.

Both films are on our video production page.

The result

Product films a national brand uses across its own channels and with trade partners. As a production project the measure is the films themselves and how widely they are used, not a lead count, and we do not dress it up as one.

Questions

Questions

What makes a good product demonstration video?
The product being used by someone who knows it, shot close enough to see what is happening, with the why explained before the how. Keep it under two minutes for a trade audience.
How long should a how to video be?
As long as the task takes and no longer. The Osmo application film runs to the time it takes to apply and cure the finish, because a fitter wants to see the real pace.
How do manufacturers use video to support trade customers?
On product pages, in merchant training, on YouTube where fitters search, and on the trade partner sites that stock the product. One film made properly serves all four.
